Dietary Information:
It seems like we have tried all of the “autism diets” over the years with little to no results until now…
We have gone Gluten free and casein free, sugar free, tried the Feingold diet stages one and two, the Yeast Connection diet, the GAPS diet, the Body Ecology diet, the raw vegan diet, and many more! We have eaten organic for many years now, and have tried to keep away from “junk” food for as long as I can remember. We had only limited success with these diets. We’d see an occasional formed bowel movement and think that their guts were healing, but we never saw the big improvements we were looking for- Namely speech, behavioral, and cognitive.
We began to be really discouraged and wonder if dietary interventions could really give us the changes we were looking for… and then we found the Spectrum Balance Protocol.
The SBP diet gave us our faith back in dietary intervention. We saw huge changes in just the first couple of months, and the best thing about it is that the diet is not for life! Unlike the other diets where progress ceases when they are discontinued, once you “graduate” from the SBP diet, progress will continue. That’s because you are correcting an imbalance. Once the corrections are made, they will stay in balance as long as you don’t overload yourself on the offending mineral/metal which is Manganese. To understand more about this, please go to Dr. Shauna’s website at www.noharmfoundation.org where you can download a copy of the complete protocol for free!
We used to think that there was no “magic” diet for healing autism, but now we have seen firsthand what can happen when you simply eat the right foods. We have to say that we change our minds! We believe that everyone can get change for their child with autism to some degree or another by following this protocol. The amount of change you will see depends on how many “best choice” foods you stick to on the list, and also on how much change your individual child needs to make. For example, we saw the most obvious changes in Nicolas first because he had so many areas to improve upon. He didn’t speak before, so hearing him say new words is obviously much more noticeable than seeing the behavioral type improvements that also occurred.
To read more about our success on the SBP diet, please subscribe to Jodi’s free blog and she will be posting progress whenever she can. It is always tough to stay on top of the many changes we are seeing because we certainly live busy lives here at the Brock household! However, we want other families to get the same gift that we have been given…a chance to hear their child’s voice for the very first time!
Here’s what you need to know…
- Download the SBP diet at the above referenced link.
- Read and understand it before you attempt to begin the diet.
- Clean out your pantry and refrigerator… if it’s in the house they WILL find it…trust me!
- Consider going on the diet as a family because it’s almost impossible to do it just for the child.
- Consider a telephone consult with Dr. Shauna Young, or even going to Colorado to see her in person at The Assertive Wellness Center. Although not necessary to do the diet, it is helpful because she uses biofeedback and other techniques to pinpoint your individual child’s needs and deficiencies. But remember that you can start the diet without a consult, and you can have success without a lot of additional supplements too!
Here are some of our other recommendations:
- Eat organic whenever possible. Meats and dairy are especially important to eat organically because they can’t be washed off. The hormones and antibiotics make you fat and wreak havoc with your adrenal glands too. Raw local dairy is your best bet, and only goat’s milk is allowed on the SBP. To learn more about the benefits of raw dairy, visit the Weston A. Price website at: www.westonaprice.org
- Eat your fruits and veggies raw when possible. You will get optimal nutrition from them this way, and the nutrients will be more beneficial in their live active state. Raw foods are great for you, but we do believe that they are not the only foods you need for good health.
- Juice whenever you can. Using a juicer to make cantaloupe smoothies and apple carrot juice is a tasty way to get some best choice foods into your child’s diet! The juice is also highly absorbable, and will be fully utilized by your child’s body. It’s also a great way to get nutrients into picky eaters. Some kids hate the texture, but will easily drink the sweet juice. The green juices are another story, but with a little creativity some kids will eventually drink them. We are currently working on a downloadable cookbook with all of our favorite SBP recipes in order to help other families who are wondering how we fed our children on this diet!
- Ditch all of your vitamin supplements and processed foods. Vitamin supplements contain high levels of manganese and are not good for you. Getting your nutrition through foods is a far better way to do it. Utilizing whole food supplements like Spirulina is ideal, because you will be getting your nutrition from a “food” supplement instead of a pill. Manganese was in a lot of our supplements, and we were quite surprised to discover its toxic effects on the brain! Moms should not take a prenatal with manganese either when they are pregnant or nursing. Instead, supplement with key things like Folic Acid, Vitamin E, Spirulina, and Calcium if needed to account for the soil deficiencies that are rampant. *This step is mandatory when following the SBP diet*
- Make all of your own baby food. Never feed your child commercial baby foods that are processed and “fortified”, as they are “fortified” with the wrong things! Instead, buy a small hand held grinder and grind up the foods that you eat for your baby. If there is a history of autism in the family, keep your baby on the SBP from birth until you are sure that he or she is developing normally. And avoid formula at all costs! Do everything you can to breastfeed, and if it doesn’t work out then look into making your own formula with raw goats milk. There is a neat recipe on the Weston Price website. Formulas are loaded with Manganese… surprise!
- Drink pure water that has been treated by reverse osmosis or steam distilled. Avoid water in plastic bottles as they sit around in warehouses and leach out chemicals into the water that they contain. Plastics contain many chemicals that act as endocrine disruptors. That means that you can get serious hormonal imbalances if you or your child ingests too much of these chemicals.
- Seek out locally grown produce. We have found a local farmers market with free range eggs, fresh veggies and more. It will save you money over buying organic from a chain supermarket, and it will make you feel better too! *Our local Arizona friends can check out Tonopah Rob’s website at www.tonopahrob.com for info on this.
- Eliminate all artificial sweeteners from your family’s diet. This includes Sweet-N-Low, Aspartame, Splenda, Equal, and all other chemical man made sweeteners. They are highly dangerous! See www.thetruthaboutsplenda.com for more info on this nasty one. Good alternatives that are SBP approved include Honey, Agave and Stevia. Make sure the Stevia is 100% pure and doesn’t contain additives like Truvia does. We use the Sweetleaf brand and prefer the liquid type so it mixes well. *This step is mandatory when following the SBP diet*
- Learn more about excitiotoxins like MSG and eliminate all sources from your diet. Russell Blaylock wrote a book called “Excitiotoxins: The Taste That Kills” that is highly recommended reading. There are lots of hidden dietary sources of MSG including but not limited to the following: natural flavors, gelatin, hydrolyzed proteins of any kind, sodium caseinate, and lots more. You really need to read this book to start deciphering labels and understanding how these toxic ingredients are hidden in our foods. *This step is mandatory when following the SBP diet*
