Support, understanding, encouragement...
Tips For Special Moms:
Pray for your husband and children every day asking God to bless them and to show you the answers you are seeking.
Join a support group even if your time is limited so that you can get to know other ladies with similar challenges.
Don't worry if your house is not perfect.... There will always be laundry, dishes and cleaning to do but your children are only young once!
Don't be too proud to ask for help when you need it. The task of raising a child with autism is all consuming, and you will eventually burn out if you try to do it all alone.
Never be embarrassed to take your child out in public even if others stare... God has given you a special child because he knew you could handle it even when you think you can't.
Smile often and it will become a habit!
Don't let your child hear you crying over their autism all the time. This is how they are right now, and they understand a lot more than you think.
Educate people every chance you get about the behaviors associated with autism so that our children become more accepted by others.
Take a bath all by yourself at least twice a week and enjoy 30 minutes of quiet!
Make time to be alone with your husband every week if you can. Go on a date and remember that you still have a relationship to nourish!
Try not to take it personally if your family and friends can't relate to what you are going through. They still love you even if they don't understand!
Treat yourself to simple pleasures like a trip to the bookstore, a new hairstyle, or a favorite snack once in awhile. You deserve it!
Remember that even Jesus came to serve, and you have a great opportunity to show love in action as He did...
Be glad instead of sad that you have been trusted to raise a child with special needs. It is a position of honor and your reward will be in heaven someday!
Try to make special time for your other children who don't often get to do the things that other families take for granted.
Keep your friends and family up to date on your child's progress and current treatment methods. Also, offer them tips on how to interact with your child in a meaningful way they can relate to.
Keep current with all of the many treatment options and become an expert in the field of autism. Never forget that you are your child's own best advocate!
Make your life easier by simplifying your house... Remove the breakables, put the candles up high, lock the refrigerator & cabinets, and keep all dangerous items out of reach. Adapt your house to your child instead of the other way around and you'll save everyone a lot of anxiety.
Avoid taking your child to places that cause too much stress until their sensory systems can better handle it. It can be frightening and overwhelming for them if they are forced to go to new places all the time. Not to mention how hard it is on you!
Always keep your hope alive. God has a plan for your child's life and it will be revealed in time. Don't stop believing!
