Pregnancy Supplement Ideas:
I have found it to be very important to supplement my pregnancies with high quality vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. I feel the best and stay healthiest when I am eating right, exercising, and supplementing with the products that I consider to be essential.
For starters, I never take prescription prenatal vitamins. They are all synthetically made, and they are not well absorbed by your body. I have tried many versions of natural prenatals over the years, and I have discovered that what works best for me is the Women’s Raw Multi Vitamin by Garden of Life. Although it is not specifically formulated to be a “prenatal” vitamin, it contains the proper nutrients that you need and it is in a bio-available form. I do not get nausea from these when taken with meals as I do from most other “prenatal” vitamins.
The other essential supplement that I take is Frequensea. It contains important trace minerals and superfoods like marine phytoplankton and noni juice. I have seen an increase in energy during my pregnancies when I take Frequensea, and it also builds up my immune system too. It is good for maintaining proper ph during pregnancy and beyond. I have taken it faithfully during my last two pregnancies, and both babies have turned out healthy and smart! To purchase Frequensea for yourself, please click here…
Flax oil and coconut oil are two oils I include every day during pregnancy and nursing. Flax contains essential fatty acids that are important for both you and the baby, and extra virgin coconut oil contains lauric acid which is one of the components found in breast milk! They are both wonderful oils that I take daily in moderation. I like to use the flax oil in my homemade salad dressings, and I use the coconut oil to cook with or to make tropical smoothies. The possibilities are endless for this great tasting tropical oil. I even make delicious raw fudge with coconut oil and other superfoods that even the children love! (Email me if you are interested in the recipe…)
Since I tend to have a fragile immune system and I have a lot of children bringing me home germs, I take Transfer Factor classic twice a day to support my immune system. It is the best product I have found to boost my immunities and keep me healthy, especially during pregnancy. I have tried every form of transfer factor and colostrums out there, and so far none can compare to the original made by 4 Life. To buy the best brand of Transfer Factor please click here…
I am prone to yeast, and so I take a quality probiotic daily. Among my favorites are Primal Defense, Three-lac , and Kyodophilus. The first two are better, but also more expensive. I have found that taking a probiotic helps to prevent the yeast infections that are common during pregnancy.
After my fifth pregnancy I suffered from post partum depression and was prescribed an SSRI called Paxil. Not only did I gain weight on Paxil, I had several other side effects that I didn’t enjoy living with. Now I know how dangerous SSRI’s can be, and so I would never take one again. In addition to side effects in the mother, several studies have shown that they are dangerous to the developing baby, so I would NEVER recommend them during pregnancy. I do tend to get mood swings and depression with my fluctuating pregnancy hormones, and so I take St. John’s Wort twice a day to control this. There are conflicting opinions on the use of St. John’s Wort in pregnancy, but I have heard from several herbalists that it is safe, and I have never had a problem with it.
I tend to follow a mostly vegan diet, and so I take an amino acid combination called The Total Amino Solution. It contains the essential amino acids so I do not have to be concerned about falling short on these requirements. This product is also good for meat eaters who suffer from fibromyalgia, depression, mood swings, and other neurological issues. Many people with bi-polar have seen good results with this product as well.
I take magnesium citrate as needed for muscle cramps, fibromyalgia symptoms and to prevent constipation. Most people today are deficient in magnesium, and so it is important to supplement this mineral especially during pregnancy.
I drink a lot of pure water during pregnancy and nursing times, and I add about 4 oz. of pure unsweetened cranberry juice to my water during the day. Cranberry juice is good for preventing bladder infections, and since you are more prone to getting these during pregnancy it is a good idea to do drink some daily. The cranberry juice will change the ph of your urine making it more resistant to bacteria, etc… and it will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. I have had bladder and kidney infections during pregnancy, and I never want to have one again!
Another supplement that I take is called Ambrotose. It is a glyconutrient supplement, and it includes D-Mannose among other things. D-Mannose is another thing that helps to prevent bladder problems. Glyconutrients help to improve communication between your cells, and therefore they help with many conditions. They are helpful in autism, Down syndrome, fibromyalgia, and many other conditions. I will be glad to help you order some at wholesale cost of you want to try this product. I don’t sell it in the gift shop, but you can email me privately if you are interested. Just do a search for glyconutrients and you can read all about the benefits of Ambrotose.
A high quality B Complex is also on my list. Sometimes I get nauseous from the B vitamins, so I make sure to take it with a meal. B vitamins help to alleviate depression and anxiety, and they reduce the likelihood of getting “the mask of pregnancy” otherwise known as dark patches on the skin (especially the face) which some women with low vitamin B levels get.
Taking Methylfolate during pregnancy (especially the first trimester) is very important for fetal development. Proper methylation is important for you as well as your baby. It can help prevent neural tube defects and many neurological problems that are related to a dysfunctional methylation cycle. Although I no longer use her protocol, I get my methylfolate (also called Folapro) from Dr. Amy Yasko’s website.
I tend to get sinus infections a lot, and since I don’t believe in taking drugs to treat them anymore, I take NAC at the first sign of congestion. NAC is a natural decongestant that works better than any over the counter drug you can get, and it’s safer too!
I take a garlic and parsley pill twice daily as well. I like to take the Source Naturals liquid caps as they don’t give me nasty garlic burps. Garlic is a natural way to control your blood pressure, and it is also a potent anti-viral that helps to boost your immunities. I take extra when I am dealing with a sinus problem or other infection.
I drink tea daily and my two favorites are the Raspberry Leaf tea sold in bulk on the Compleat Mother website, and the Pregnancy Tea made by Traditional Medicinals which is found in most health food stores. Remember to use stevia or agave to sweeten the tea so that your blood sugar stays nice and low during pregnancy.
I also drink a green food powder supplement twice daily which I reconstitute in water. Among my favorite brands are Alka-green which is a pure barley grass powder, and David Wolfe’s the Sun is Shining product which is a superfood combination that can’t be beat! I consider these very important for maintaining ph and alkalinity during pregnancy.
In addition to these things, I try to add the following things into my diet each day:
- Apple Cider Vinegar (the raw unpasteurized kind)
- Fermented foods
- Raw vegetable juices (cucumber, kale, carrot, beet, celery, parsley, cilantro, etc…)
- Raw almond milk (for calcium)
- Celtic sea salt or Real Salt brand sea salt
- Lots of raw fruits and vegetables including 1-2 large salads daily
I have found that adding too much protein to my diet actually makes me feel heavy and sluggish. I feel the best when I eat light and often. My foods are as organic as possible, and I try to avoid all chemicals and other toxins both to stay healthy and to ensure a healthy baby…and after that the rest is up to God!
